Interior Ministry Reveals Fate of Detainees Related to Generation Z Protests

The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, Rashid Khalafi, stated on Wednesday in Rabat that the recent detentions by public security forces primarily aim to verify identities.

According to Khalafi, only those who engage in acts of violence or violate the law are placed in preventive custody.

The spokesman emphasized that the ministry will continue to fulfill its constitutional duty to protect public security and order while upholding individual and collective rights and freedoms.

Khalafi remarked, “The Kingdom of Morocco has made significant strides in the field of freedom of expression, including the right to peaceful protest that respects existing legal provisions.” He clarified, “Available figures confirm this, as over 600 protest movements are recorded monthly, occurring under normal conditions.”

He noted that the majority of detentions during recent demonstrations were for identity verification, while preventive custody was applied to those incriminated in acts constituting a crime, such as obstructing traffic, arson, assaulting public security forces with stones, or damaging public and private property.

Khalafi added that “all intervention operations were conducted with the transparency mandated by law, enabling media outlets to follow the events freely without any form of restriction or interference, thus reflecting respect for the right to information and ensuring transparency regarding the implementation of security measures.”
