The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, Rashid Khalfi, reported on Wednesday, October 1, in Rabat, that recent demonstrations in several regions were prohibited due to a lack of compliance with applicable legal provisions.
In a clarification to the media, Khalfi stated that “unregulated gatherings were noted, and their origins were unclear.” This was in reference to the “Gen Z protests” that began last Saturday in various Moroccan cities.
He added that the “essence of the public authorities’ decision to prohibit is driven by the need to balance citizens’ right to peaceful demonstration (Article 29 of the Constitution) with the community’s right to security, stability, and safety (Article 21 of the Constitution).”
The spokesperson concluded that “achieving this balance is a fundamental duty of public authorities.”
