U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau announced that in the context of Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its territory, the U.S. government has decided to encourage American investments in the southern regions of the Kingdom.
In a statement following discussions held Wednesday in New York with Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita, Landau said, “I met with Moroccan Foreign Minister Bourita yesterday to celebrate our long-term partnership and discuss opportunities to expand prosperity for both of our countries.”
He added, “I am pleased to announce that we will provide support to American companies looking to invest and do business throughout Morocco, including Western Sahara. As Secretary Rubio has made clear, the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara and supports Morocco’s genuine autonomy proposal as the sole basis for a just and lasting resolution. We urge the parties to negotiate without further delay to reach an acceptable solution that brings prosperity, peace, and stability to the region.”
