On Tuesday, September 24, King Mohammed VI launched railway projects valued at 20 billion dirhams in Casablanca, including a new initiative dubbed “proximity trains.”
According to project details reviewed by King Mohammed VI, these trains will operate within the urban area of the metropolitan city, aiming to provide a train service every 7.5 minutes, set to begin in 2030.
To implement the project, railway lines will be constructed over a total distance of 92 kilometers, effectively linking key urban and semi-urban hubs while ensuring access to strategic locations such as the Grand Stadium Hassan II and Mohammed V International Airport.
In this context, ten new stations will be built over a 20-month period with a budget of 625 million dirhams, following a cohesive architectural charter that guarantees comfort, accessibility, and efficiency for travelers.
These stations will include: “Mohammedia – Colleges,” “Zenata,” “Sidi Bernoussi,” “Ain Sebaa,” “Hay Mohammadi,” “New City,” “Mers Sultan,” “Oasis,” “Sidi Maarouf,” and “Nouasser.” Existing stations will also be upgraded to fully integrate with the nearby metropolitan train services.
These three lines are expected to accommodate 150,000 passengers daily once operational.
In addition to the three proximity train lines, an “Aero-Express” service will be launched, connecting the Casablanca-port station directly to Mohammed V International Airport via shuttle buses every 15 minutes. Regional train services will be enhanced on the El Jadida and Settat routes with shuttles operating every 30 minutes.
To meet regional and local transportation needs, plans are underway to acquire 48 self-propelled train units with a capacity exceeding 1,000 seats and speeds of up to 160 km/h, at a total cost of 7 billion dirhams (excluding taxes).
