Local authorities in Casablanca reported that two people died and two others sustained varying degrees of injury this morning in the collapse of a four-story building in Derb Rmeyd, located in the old city of Casablanca.
Upon being notified of the incident, local and security authorities, along with civil protection services, arrived at the scene to initiate rescue and recovery operations and to secure the area around the building.
The authorities indicated that the collapsed structure had been listed among buildings at risk of collapse and had been subject to an evacuation order issued by the relevant authorities since 2012. Most residents complied with this order, while some refused to leave despite repeated attempts by local authorities to encourage them to ensure their safety.
The injured were transported to Moulay Youssef Regional Hospital for necessary medical treatment, and the public prosecutor’s office has been informed of the incident to initiate a judicial investigation.
