Morocco Bans Nail Polish and Gel Due to TPO Component

Morocco has decided to ban the marketing of nail polish and gel due to the presence of a hazardous substance that may be carcinogenic, according to a decision by the Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products.

The substance in question is 3-(trifluoromethyl) benzoyl phosphine oxide, known as TPO.

On Saturday, the agency informed healthcare professionals and stakeholders in the beauty sector, as well as consumers, that the use of nail polish and gel products containing TPO is now strictly prohibited. The agency noted that studies have shown that repeated exposure to this substance may pose health risks, including potential toxic effects.

This decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of available scientific data and international standards related to TPO, which is used as a “photoinitiator” in some types of gel and nail polish that cure under ultraviolet light, revealing concerning toxic properties.

In this context, the agency urged beauty sector professionals to immediately cease using products containing this substance and to ensure they are not offered to customers. It also urged consumers to carefully check the formulations of the products they use, especially nail polishes and gel types, to ensure compliance with safety standards.

This decision is part of the agency’s pivotal role in health vigilance, ensuring the safety and quality of health products available in the national market, and protecting public health. It also contributes to aligning national standards with the best international practices regarding the safety and regulation of cosmetic products.

The Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products emphasized the utmost importance of implementing the provisions of this advisory memorandum to protect consumer health, calling on all stakeholders to take necessary measures to disseminate and apply these directives.
